Stockholm selector Mr. Tophat shares his selection of songs on the theme of love, for episode 7 of our monthly podcast series.
In his own words....
"Isn't love itself a pastiche?
Love is an illusion.
Love can be schizophrenic.
Love is a pastiche.
It's so many emotions. It feels like the emotions control you, not vice verse.
From the very first love with a long and solid relationship, all the way to divorce.
How could it happened?
In that kind of sense I would describe love as an illusion. It's just a word for a certain time or mode.
I searched through my record vault and found some vinyls that I found quite perfect for this illusion.
I tried to find records with the balance between sadness and happiness. Like I'd like to say "the schizophrenic side of love".
Love gives a lot in the beginning (and when everything is okay), but it also drains a lot and can just be... pure sorrow and pure darkness.
Disco often contains lots of (positive) energy, but it also has a darker side, which I find interesting. If you listen to disco very briefly you think it's only about positive and happy vibes, but in reality it's also about the shit and problems in life. The happy and friendly vibe is a veil that covers all the issues. This is what I believe makes a lot of the disco interesting. The makeup is often based on a psychotic sur- un- real world; and perhaps most commonly the emotion of love. What's not easier than love? Perhaps hate.
